Play California Speed Online
Look across all eight cards, find equal ranks and cover them before the computer does. California Speed brings the California Speed card game to a bright citrus table, with a full 52-card race and twenty original practice challenges. Clear your unseen hand first while learning why the row you cover matters when the table gets collected.
How to play California Speed online
- Choose a numbered challenge or Fresh CPU match, then press Start.
- Find two or more exposed cards of equal rank anywhere in the eight-pile layout.
- Cover a matching card with the next unseen card from your hand; its rank does not need to match.
- When no covers remain, the rows are collected and dealt again. Empty your hand first to win.
Controls
Tap and release a card to cover it, or press its number key from 1 to 8. B starts or resumes; G toggles the match guide. Board & last play pauses the table and explains its visible state. Dragging away cancels a tap.
A tip before you start
Check both rows. Covering a card on the CPU's row sends that card into the CPU's hand at the next pickup, but passing up a nearer match can also give the computer time to act.
Eight piles, with no waiting for a turn
A standard deck is divided into two hands of 26. Each player deals four cards to a row. Pairs, three equal ranks and four equal ranks can appear across either row; suits and colors do not affect a match. Both players race to cover matching cards, including different members of one group. The card you place comes from your unseen hand and may have any rank.
Follow the gold dots through a shared match
Imagine two exposed sevens. You cover the first with a queen before the CPU reaches the other seven. That original second seven remains available, shown by a small gold dot. Its permission ends when it is covered; the pile itself is not permanently open. Newly visible equal ranks create fresh opportunities. These persistent markers are this edition's digital way of handling a partly covered match. Turn the optional green match guide on while learning or off to scan the ranks yourself.
Your row determines what comes back
When all covers are exhausted, the top row belongs to you and the bottom row belongs to the CPU. Each owner collects every card in their row under the remaining hand, then lays out four new tops. This edition collects piles from left to right and takes each stack top-first, a fixed digital ordering convention. A card on the other row can therefore return to your opponent at pickup even if you originally played it.
Twenty full-deal reaction challenges
Each challenge starts with a complete fixed 52-card deal and requires a win. The CPU's placement interval decreases at every level: 1.50 seconds in the first challenge, down to 0.55 seconds in the twentieth. The allowance for invalid covers also falls from three to zero in groups of five levels. Later challenges demand quicker scanning and cleaner input, rather than merely changing the shuffle. The optional guide remains available throughout. These casual targets are not a reaction-time assessment or a leaderboard.
A transparent computer opponent
The computer chooses from the same public matching cards and unfinished marked matches you can use. It prefers your row when possible but does not inspect either hidden hand. The displayed interval controls its next placement. A CPU deadline is resolved before a human action arriving at exactly that time. Fresh CPU match uses the middle pace from challenge ten, draws a fresh deal and has no accuracy limit.
Pause, inspect and return to the same deal
Pause, Help, Board & last play, resizing and leaving the window stop the action. Start resumes the remaining CPU budget. The inspection panel lists visible cards, pile sizes and the last cover without exposing hidden hands. An invalid cover spends no card; in a challenge, exceeding its allowance ends that attempt. Restart repeats the initial deal after confirmation. Local saves preserve unlocks, best results, sound and a validated game history when storage works.
California Speed and ordinary Speed
This page uses the fixed eight-pile, equal-rank covering profile described by Pagat and Denexa. It does not use ordinary Speed's one-higher or one-lower center-pile building. The same-pile duplicate variation and the changing-width layouts of Aggravation are outside this edition. Play free online with no ads, download or account; the opponent here is a computer, with no online room or cash stake.
Frequently asked questions
Does the card from my hand have to match?
No. First identify equal ranks already visible on the table. The next unseen card from your hand can cover a member of that match regardless of its own rank.
Why can a single seven still have a gold dot?
It was part of a match whose other original card has already been covered. The dot preserves that unfinished cover until this exact card is replaced. It does not let you cover the pile forever.
Can both players cover the same matching group?
Yes. You and the CPU may cover different members of a pair, triple or four-card group. Only one placement can replace a particular exposed card; an input aimed at a card that changed while you were pressing is canceled.
Which cards do I collect when there are no matches?
You collect all four stacks in the top row, including cards played there by the CPU. The CPU collects the bottom row. Each collection goes beneath its owner's remaining hand before four new tops are dealt.
Is this the same as Speed or Spit?
Names vary, but this edition matches the California Speed eight-pile covering rules. It does not build ascending or descending runs on central piles.
What makes the later challenges harder?
Every level shortens the CPU's placement interval by 0.05 seconds. The allowed number of invalid covers also decreases from three to zero. Every challenge is a complete fixed-deal game that you must win.
Can I save or pause the race?
Yes. Pause and inspection panels freeze the remaining CPU time. Start resumes it. Browser storage keeps progress and validates the saved game history when available; a storage error is shown rather than silently claiming a save.
Can I play with a friend or undo a cover?
This edition offers a computer opponent and individual challenges. It has no local two-player mode, remote multiplayer, undo or auto-play hint during the race.
