How to play No Four in a Row online

  1. Read the fixed starting X and O clues. Their small corner mark distinguishes them from editable squares.
  2. Select an empty square and inspect horizontal, vertical and both diagonal lines through it.
  3. Place the opposite symbol wherever three matching symbols occupy the other positions of a four-cell window.
  4. Fill every empty square without creating a matching four, then continue to the next unlocked challenge.

Controls

Tap a square or move with the arrow keys, then press X or O or use the symbol buttons. Clear removes your entry. L cycles the line preview, E explains the selected square, H requests a hint, C checks direct conflicts and U undoes. Close Help or an explanation to return to the board.

A tip before you start

Inspect four-cell windows rather than just long rows. X, X, empty, X forces an O in the gap, and the same deduction works along either diagonal.

One rule, four directions

Every square contains either X or O. Four consecutive matching symbols are forbidden horizontally, vertically and in both diagonal directions. A longer run is also forbidden because it includes a four-cell window. Three matching symbols are allowed. The givens remain fixed throughout the attempt.

There is no equal-count rule

The grid does not require equal numbers of X and O. Rows and columns may repeat, provided no matching four appears. There are no region counts or connected-color requirements. These details distinguish this puzzle from Binairo and Aqre, which have their own rules and separate game pages.

Read a line crossing the selected cell

The Line button highlights one four-cell window through your selected square. Press it again to move through the other crossing windows and finally turn the preview off. The status names its direction and lists its current symbols. Use it to notice diagonal or gapped patterns without changing any entries.

Explain an exclusion

Explain describes whether X or O would immediately form a matching four at the selected square. When a symbol is excluded, it names the direction and the four row-and-column coordinates involved. A symbol that causes no immediate conflict can still prevent a complete solution later. Local permission is a useful check, not a guarantee.

Hints show the exact forced line

Each attempt has three hints. A hint first checks whether your current entries can be completed, then fills an empty square whose other three positions in a four-cell window already match. The explanation names the line and why the opposite symbol is forced. Impossible entries, an inconclusive search or no immediate forced line leave the hint count unchanged. Undo restores the previous entry without refunding a hint.

Twenty original challenges

The course starts on a five-by-five grid and grows through six-by-six and seven-by-seven to eight-by-eight. Each puzzle is independently created and has a verified unique solution. Empty squares increase from six to twenty-five, and those squares participate in more four-cell windows at every level. Every original starting board can be completed through explained forced-line deductions. These are structural progression measures; individual solving time varies.

Check, undo and start again

Check highlights direct four-symbol conflicts. A clean check does not certify all your entries. Undo restores the last symbol edit. Restart and level changes ask before replacing the current attempt. A completed level unlocks the next one; you can return to previously unlocked challenges.

Local progress and clear controls

Unlocked levels, best scores and sound preference are saved in this browser. The unfinished grid is not saved, so a reload starts a fresh attempt. If storage is unavailable, records last only for the session. Keyboard and pointer controls share the same rules, and the help text opens separately from the main game. No account is required.

Frequently asked questions

Do diagonal lines count?

Yes. Check diagonals sloping down to the right and down to the left, as well as rows and columns.

Can I have three matching symbols together?

Yes. Three are allowed. A fourth matching symbol immediately before or after them would be forbidden.

Must each row have equal numbers of X and O?

No. This game has no balancing rule. Fill the grid while avoiding matching fours in all four directions.

Does Explain use one of my hints?

No. Explain reviews immediate restrictions without filling an answer. The separate Hint button fills and explains one forced square, using one of three hints when it succeeds.

Is this the two-player Connect Four game?

No. This is a single-player logic puzzle with fixed starting symbols. There is no gravity, alternating opponent or goal to make a line of four.
