How to play Togyzkumalak online

  1. White starts. Choose a nonempty pit on your row. With two or more stones, return the first to its starting pit and sow the others forward. A single stone moves directly to the next pit.
  2. If the final stone makes an ordinary opposing pit even, capture all its stones. If it makes exactly three and qualifies for a tuzdyk, that pit becomes yours permanently.
  3. Capture 82 stones to win. In a study, force White's win within the displayed number of White moves. Full games have no study move limit.

Controls

Tap a pit or use its numbered button. Keys 1–9 select a pit on the active side; arrows move focus and Enter or Space plays it. H asks for a hint, and U or Ctrl+Z undoes. Position & rules shows every pit count and the latest sowing path. Help, pause, sound, confirmed restart and fullscreen controls are available.

A tip before you start

Count every deposit, including stones that disappear into a tuzdyk. Changing one opponent pit from odd to even can create a capture, but sowing through their tuzdyk also adds to their store. Near the finish, check whether the next player will still have a playable pit before relying on another turn.

The board and sowing direction

Each player begins with nine stones in each of nine pits. The two stores hold captured stones and are outside the sowing ring. Your pits run from 1 to 9 from your own left to right: White is the lower row, while Black's numbers run right to left on screen. After your pit 9, sow into the opponent's pit 1. Turns alternate without a store-based extra turn.

Keeping one stone or moving a singleton

For a pit containing several stones, lift them all and put the first back into that same pit. Continue with one stone per following pit, making another circuit if necessary. A pit containing one stone is the exception: leave it empty and move that stone one pit forward. The exact number printed below a pit matters; the illustration shows at most 14 seeds.

Even captures and the three-stone tuzdyk

Only the final landing pit can trigger an ordinary capture. If it is on the opponent's side, is not already a tuzdyk and now contains an even number, move all those stones to your store. If it instead contains exactly three, an eligible tuzdyk is created automatically and those three score immediately. This is not an opposite-pit capture.

Where a tuzdyk is allowed

Each player can create one tuzdyk during the game. You cannot choose the opponent's pit 9, or a pit with the same number as their existing tuzdyk. For example, if Black owns White pit 4, White cannot make Black pit 4 a tuzdyk. Ending in a forbidden three remains a legal move, but earns no capture. Once created, every stone sown into that pit goes straight to its owner's store, regardless of who moved. The pit stays empty and cannot be played.

Winning, atsyrau and repeated positions

A store containing at least 82 wins; 81 each is a draw. After a move finishes, if the next player has no legal pit, the remaining stones go to the store of the player whose side holds them. Compare the resulting stores to settle this atsyrau ending. Merely emptying your own side does not end the game while your opponent can still move. This untimed browser profile automatically claims a draw on the third identical full position. Physical clocks, touch-move penalties and agreed early draws are not used.

Twenty endgame studies with increasing choices

Every study starts from a position reached through legal play from the full initial board. Force a White win within the stated budget, counting only White's moves. The targets have been checked against every legal Black reply. Required lookahead grows from one to four White moves; opening options grow from one to nine, and reachable decision states increase at every level. Individual positions may feel easier or harder depending on your plan.

Full games, hints and Undo

Play a complete game against a bounded, beatable computer, always as White, or choose two players on the same device. The entire board is visible to both sides. Studies allow two successful hints; a search that reaches its limit does not prove the position lost. Undo restores your last move and any computer reply, or one move in two-player mode. Used hints remain spent. A failed study can be undone or restarted.

Local progress and the supported rules

Challenge unlocks, best results and sound preferences save on this device when storage is available. Unfinished games restart after reloading. Restart and mode changes require confirmation. This version has no remote rooms, clocks, accounts or cash stakes. Its nine-pit sowing and tuzdyk rules are distinct from the six-pit Kalah game available on the separate Mancala page.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the first stone return to its starting pit?

That is the normal rule when the pit held two or more stones. Only a singleton skips its starting pit and goes directly to the next one.

Does landing on three always create a tuzdyk?

No. The pit must be on the opposing side, must not be pit 9, and must not share the number of the opponent's tuzdyk. You must also have no tuzdyk already. If eligible, creating it is compulsory here.

Who receives a stone deposited in a tuzdyk?

The owner shown by its W or B marker receives it immediately, even when the other player sowed that stone. The pit remains empty.

Can I earn another turn by reaching my store?

No. Stores are not part of the sowing path, and turns alternate. This game does not use Kalah's extra-turn rule.

Does an empty row always end the game immediately?

The deciding condition is whether the next player has a legal move. If they do, play continues. Otherwise the remaining stones are collected by the owners of their respective sides and the stores determine the result.

Can two people play together?

Yes, on the same device using the two-player mode. There is no remote online matchmaking.

What happens when a study runs out of moves?

The study fails if White has not won within the budget. Use Undo to restore the previous turn or confirm a restart. Your unlocked studies remain available.
