Play Cryptogram Online
Cryptogram is a letter-substitution puzzle built around twenty original garden notes. If you enjoy cryptogram puzzle games, start with a nearly readable message and work toward notes with more missing letter mappings. Select a cipher symbol, choose its plain letter, and watch every matching symbol change together.
How to play Cryptogram online
- Read the visible letters and word shapes. Green plain letters are fixed clues; the small letters underneath are the cipher symbols.
- Select a symbol in the message or frequency strip, then choose a plain letter with the screen keyboard or type A–Z. Each plain letter can belong to only one cipher symbol.
- Restore the original note to unlock the next one. Clear a conflicting guess, undo an edit, or use a limited hint when you need a starting point.
Controls
Tap a cipher symbol and then a keyboard letter. Left and Right move between symbols, Backspace or Delete clears a guess, and Enter checks the note. Previous, Next, Clear, Undo, Hint and Check also have screen buttons. Opening Help pauses input until you close it.
A tip before you start
Look for repeated word patterns before committing to a letter. The frequency strip shows how often each cipher symbol appears. A repeated three-letter word may give you more useful context than the single most common symbol.
Cryptogram puzzles online, free to play
All twenty notes are available through the challenge sequence without a download or account. There is no timer and no penalty life for a wrong guess. You can experiment with the sentence and revise your letter mappings at your own pace. No ads.
A gradual decoding challenge
The first note begins with three unknown mappings; each later note adds one, ending with twenty-two. The hint allowance drops from three to two and then one. These counts describe the amount of decoding required, while familiarity with a word or phrase can still make an individual note feel easier.
Hints and conflicting guesses
A hint reveals one correct letter mapping. If its plain letter is already used by a wrong guess elsewhere, that conflicting guess is cleared in the same edit. Undo restores both changes together, but does not refund a used hint. Fixed starting clues cannot be overwritten.
Original notes, not famous quotations
The messages are short original pieces about a garden and its visitors. The goal is to restore the written note. The game does not claim that a partly decoded sentence has only one possible interpretation in English.
Frequently asked questions
Can I solve cryptogram puzzles free online?
Yes. Cryptogram runs in your browser, with twenty free notes, letter frequencies, an on-screen keyboard, limited hints and undo.
Why can I not use the same plain letter twice?
Different cipher symbols represent different plain letters. Repeated occurrences of one cipher symbol share its existing mapping. Clear the other assignment before reusing its plain letter.
Does Check reveal the answer?
No. Check reports whether any letters are blank or whether the completed message matches the original. It does not mark each wrong letter for you.
What happens when I reload?
Unlocked notes, best scores and sound settings are saved when browser storage is available. An unfinished note is not saved; reloading opens the first note, and the menu lets you select any unlocked note.
Can I play on a phone?
The portrait board places the message, frequency strip and keyboard in one game window. You can use touch controls, and Help opens separately. Full screen is available where your browser supports it.
