How to play Frogs and Toads online

  1. Tap a creature that can move forward into the empty pad. It may slide one place or jump over one creature of the other kind.
  2. Keep both groups moving through each other. Jumping never removes a creature, and neither group can go backwards.
  3. Finish with all amber toads at the low-numbered end, all green frogs at the high-numbered end, and the empty pad between them.

Controls

Tap or click a creature, or drag it to the empty pad. Previous pad and Next pad move the keyboard focus; Hop moves that creature. Arrow keys select, Enter or Space hops, H shows a hint, P plays the hint, and U undoes. Help, sound, pause, restart and full-screen controls are available beside the puzzle.

A tip before you start

Look at the space your move leaves behind. A legal slide can still trap the groups. When you have a jump and a slide to consider, check whether the slide puts two creatures of the same kind in each other's way.

Forward slides and jumps

The path has exactly one empty pad. A slide moves one creature to the next pad in its forward direction. A jump skips exactly one creature of the opposite kind and lands on the empty pad immediately beyond it. You cannot jump your own kind, skip two creatures, land on an occupied pad or move backwards.

You control both groups

This is the single-player swapping puzzle. You can move either a green frog or an amber toad whenever its move is legal; the colours do not alternate turns. The goal is a complete exchange of positions. There is no opponent to eliminate, and the jumped creature stays on the board.

Twenty full boards with longer routes

Every level starts with the two complete groups separated by a gap. The route grows from three moves in the first challenge to 41 in the last. The number of creatures never decreases, and each board has more reachable positions than the one before it. The final challenge has five green frogs and six amber toads on twelve pads. There is no timer or move limit.

The empty pad determines your options

Because there is only one gap, only a few creatures can move at once. The gap changes position after every move. A seemingly helpful move can strand a group behind its own neighbours, so plan the next landing before choosing a slide. If no forward move remains before the groups have swapped, the board is a dead end.

Recover with Undo and honest hints

Undo restores one move, even after a dead end or a completed puzzle. Hint searches for a complete route from your current position and marks its next move; you choose whether to play it. If no complete swap remains, it asks you to undo without using a hint. Three successful hints are available per attempt, and Undo does not refund them.

One logical path on every screen

On a narrow screen, longer paths fold into two rows to keep the creatures readable. Follow the gold connector and the pad numbers: the top row continues down at the right, then returns along the bottom row. Two pads that happen to sit near each other are not neighbours unless their numbers are consecutive. The legal moves stay the same.

Count the slides and jumps

For a green frogs and b amber toads, a successful forward swap uses a × b jumps and a + b slides. Each frog has to pass every toad once. Three of each therefore need nine jumps and six slides, or 15 moves. The counters let you compare that pattern with your own route. Undo restores these counters along with the board.

Keep your progress between visits

Completing a level unlocks the next one. Unlocks, best scores and sound preference save locally when browser storage is available. Unfinished attempts start again after a reload. Restarting or selecting another unlocked level asks for confirmation, and other games' saved progress stays separate.

Frequently asked questions

Can a frog move backwards?

No. Green creatures move toward higher pad numbers and amber creatures toward lower ones. Undo reverses your last decision, but backwards moves are not part of the puzzle rules.

Does jumping remove a toad?

No. Both groups keep all their creatures. The move only changes which side of the other creature the jumper occupies.

Why did the puzzle stop before the groups swapped?

You reached a position with no legal forward move. Use Undo to return to an earlier choice, or restart the same board.

Why does the path bend on my phone?

The folded layout keeps a longer path readable. Follow the gold line and pad numbers; it is still the same one-dimensional puzzle.

Can I try either colour first?

Yes. You control both groups and may start with either legal forward slide.

Will a hint make the move for me?

Not immediately. It marks a move from a complete route. Tap the creature or choose Play hint when you want to use it.
