Looking for a mahjong game where you slide the tiles? Mahjong Slide turns each move into a choice of direction: send a numbered tile toward its matching partner, use blockers to line up a pair, and clear the board. Play 20 original puzzles free online with no ads or download.
How to play Mahjong Slide online
- Tap a tile to select it. Then tap one of the four direction arrows or use your keyboard arrow keys.
- The selected tile slides as far as it can in that direction. A matching first blocker removes both tiles; a different tile stops the slide in the empty square just before it.
- Use edges and other tiles to line up partners. You cannot stop halfway, push a tile, cross a blocker or wrap around an edge.
- Clear every pair to unlock the next puzzle. Any clearing solution wins; the shortest-slide target is a challenge, not a move limit.
Controls
Tap a tile and then an on-board direction arrow. Arrow keys also slide the selected tile; N and P select the next or previous tile. Escape clears selection. Undo or Ctrl+Z restores the complete last slide. Hint outlines a tile and names a direction; Follow hint makes that single move. Taps commit on release, and dragging away cancels them. Help and Pause block play.
A tip before you start
Before removing an easy pair, check whether one of its tiles is a useful stopper. A different tile can bring a moving tile into the same row or column as its partner; clearing that stopper too early may cost extra moves.
A precise slide-to-match rule
Each numbered face appears exactly twice in one visible layer. A slide goes horizontally or vertically to the edge or first occupied square. If that first tile has the same number, the pair disappears in one move, even when the tiles started adjacent. Otherwise the moving tile stops in the last empty square before the blocker. A direction that changes nothing is not counted. These are Mahjong Slide’s own stopping rules; other sliding Mahjong games may behave differently.
Twenty puzzles that ask for more planning
The smallest board is 4×4; later puzzles use up to 6×6 squares and 11 pairs. Exact shortest solutions increase from 2 to 21 slides. Later boards also need more repositioning: the minimum number of moves that do not remove a pair rises from 0 to 10. All starting puzzles have a verified clearing route. You can take a longer route without failing, and there is no timer.
Matching is about the number
Every tile shows a large number with a small supporting mark. Match identical numbers rather than relying on color alone. An aligned pair may still be separated by a different tile, which must be moved or removed first. Selection and hint outlines help keep track of the tile you intend to move.
Undo, hints and blocked boards
Each attempt has three hint previews. Follow hint makes the displayed move; Undo can reverse it but does not return the spent hint. A bounded search can be inconclusive, in which case the game spends no hint and does not call the puzzle lost. Revisiting a position is allowed. A confirmed board with no clearing route lets you Undo or restart the same puzzle.
Saved progress and a fresh board
Restart and level changes ask before replacing the current attempt. If browser storage is available, unlocked levels, best scores and sound preferences survive a reload. The board and Undo history do not: reopening starts a fresh first puzzle while retaining your unlocks. The game does not require an account.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the mahjong game where you slide the tiles?
Yes. In this version you move a selected tile along a row or column until it meets the edge or first tile. Colliding with the same number removes the pair. It is a solo sliding puzzle with an explicit stopping rule, rather than a four-player Mahjong hand.
Can I stop a tile anywhere along a row?
No. Each move is a full slide to an edge or the first blocker. A different tile stops your tile immediately before it, so blockers can help create useful alignments.
Do I have to finish in the shortest number of slides?
No. Clear all pairs to win. The displayed shortest solution gives you a target for improving your score, but there is no move limit or timer.
Does returning to an earlier position mean I am stuck?
No. Repeated positions are legal. A hint search only declares no solution after it has completed its search; hitting the search budget is inconclusive and does not spend a hint. Undo is available for reversing an unhelpful move.
Is this the same as classic Mahjong solitaire?
The goal of clearing matching pairs is familiar, but the moves differ. This game slides tiles on one layer. It has no stacked or covered tiles, side-free selection rule, stock or random redeal.
