How to play Mahjong Solitaire online

  1. Find two identical fruit tiles that are both free: no tile above, and the left or right side open.
  2. Tap or click the first tile, then its matching free partner to remove the pair.
  3. Clear every pair to unlock the next layout.

Controls

Tap or click a free tile to select it, then choose a matching free tile. Tapping the selected tile again clears the selection; choosing a different fruit selects that tile instead. Darkened tiles are blocked. Undo pair restores the last removed pair. Hint pair outlines a pair to consider without removing it for you.

A tip before you start

Look at what a pair will uncover before removing it. A pair on top of the stack may release useful tiles underneath, while opening an outside edge can free a blocked row. When several copies of a fruit are available, the choice of two can change which moves remain.

Decide whether a matching pair is actually free

Check both tiles separately. A fruit picture can match another tile while still being blocked.

  1. First inspect the top of each tile. A tile with another tile overlapping it cannot be selected.
  2. Then inspect its horizontal sides. Either the left side or the right side must be open; both do not need to be open.
  3. Select two identical fruit pictures that both pass those checks. Matching tiles do not need to be next to each other.
  4. Before removing a pair, consider which tiles will become uncovered or gain an open side. Undo pair lets you revisit a choice that creates a dead end.
Rule examples for Mahjong Solitaire
Top of tileLeft / right sidesCan it be selected?
UncoveredOne side open, one side blockedYes.
UncoveredBoth sides blockedNo.
CoveredOne or both sides openNo: the top must also be clear.

An open top and an open side are access rules, not a requirement to draw a connecting path. This is pair removal, not a three-tile collection tray.

Twenty layouts with growing stacks

The first layout has four pairs. Each new challenge adds one more pair, reaching twenty-three pairs in the last. Boards progress from one layer to two and then three, so later choices involve both side access and the tiles covered below. Every original starting layout has a verified clearing route.

Understand the free-tile rule

A matching picture alone is not enough. Neither tile can have another tile overlapping its top, and each needs at least one open horizontal side. Both sides do not have to be open. Free tiles keep their bright appearance; blocked tiles are shaded.

Recover from a dead end

A solvable starting layout can still lead to a dead end after an unfortunate pair choice. If no matching free pair remains, use Undo pair or restart. Hint pair searches for a move that still allows the current position to be cleared. It asks you to undo if the position cannot be finished; a search-limit message also suggests returning to an earlier position.

Take your time with each pair

There is no timer and no countdown bonus. A completed layout scores one hundred points per pair, with twenty-five points deducted for each successful hint, down to a minimum score of one. Hint pair leaves the actual matching to you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play these mahjong games free with no ads?

Yes. All twenty layouts are free with no ads and no download.

Is this four-player mahjong?

This is single-player mahjong solitaire with original fruit pictures and compact layouts of eight to forty-six tiles. It does not use four-player hands or scoring.

Do matching tiles have to be connected by a path?

No. This version uses stacked solitaire rules. Match any two identical free tiles; there is no line-connection rule or collection tray.

Can a hint clear a pair for me?

No. It outlines a pair on a verified route from the current position when the search finds one. You still select and remove the pair yourself.

What progress does the game save?

Unlocked challenges, best scores and your sound setting are saved in this browser when local storage is available. An unfinished attempt starts fresh after a reload. Restart asks for confirmation and keeps your unlocked challenges.

Can I use a phone or computer?

The game has touch controls as well as computer controls. The board, status and necessary buttons share one game window; Help opens in a separate dialog. Full screen is available where your browser supports it.

Why can I not remove two identical tiles?

Both tiles must be free: nothing overlapping their tops and at least one open horizontal side each. Matching pictures alone are not sufficient.
