How to play Shut the Box online

  1. Choose Random: 1–9, Random: 1–10 or Random: 1–12. Roll two dice to begin with every tile open.
  2. Select any set of open tiles whose numbers add to your roll, then press Shut tiles. A roll of 8 could close 8, 1 plus 7, or 1 plus 2 plus 5 when those tiles are open.
  3. Keep rolling and closing tiles. If no available combination matches a roll, add the remaining numbers for your score. Zero means you shut the box.

Controls

Tap tiles to toggle them, then confirm with Shut tiles. Previous, Next tile and Toggle tile provide button controls. Arrow keys move focus, Enter or Space toggles, P closes tiles, R rolls two dice, O rolls one when allowed, U undoes and H hints. Help, pause, sound and fullscreen controls are available.

A tip before you start

Look beyond the largest number. Leaving several small tiles can give you more ways to match a later roll. In a study, every future total is visible, so compare the full sequence before closing a tempting combination.

Shut the Box game rules for 1–9

The nine-tile board starts with numbers 1 through 9 open. A legal move closes a nonempty set with exactly the rolled sum; you may use more than two tiles. Once closed, a tile stays closed for the rest of the round. An invalid selection does not consume your roll.

Shut the Box game rules for 1–10

The ten-tile mode adds a tile numbered 10. The closure rule and remaining-sum score stay the same. For a total of 10, you can close the 10 itself or combine other open numbers. You still need two dice while any tile above 6 remains open, including tile 10.

Shut the Box game rules for 1–12

The twelve-tile mode begins with numbers 1 through 12, totaling 78 points. Numbers 11 and 12 can close alone only when the dice reach their respective totals. They can also remain open while you close smaller combinations. This mode uses addition and permanent closures, with no subtraction or reopening rule.

When can you use one die?

This version allows either one die or two dice once every tile above 6 is closed. It checks the highest open tile, not the sum of the board. For example, open tiles 1, 2, 3 and 4 total 10, but you may still choose one die. If tile 7 is open, two dice are required. Other published variants use a different condition, so agree on the rule before playing a physical set.

Twenty challenges with a visible dice sequence

Study challenges show every remaining two-dice total from left to right. Early lessons begin after legal earlier closures; later lessons use more tiles, more meaningful choices and deeper planning. Your goal is to leave zero points before the sequence ends. Any successful combination sequence is accepted. These fixed-sequence puzzles are separate from random rounds and do not promise a winning strategy for every random roll.

Scoring, hints and exact Undo

The round score is the sum of the open numbers, so lower is better. A study hint searches the visible sequence; a random-round hint simply favors closing a high tile and does not calculate optimal probabilities or inspect future rolls. Undo restores the previous action and its exact dice state. Repeating the same roll after Undo produces the same result, while spent study hints remain spent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I close three or more tiles in one turn?

Yes. Any nonempty set of open tiles is legal if its numbers add to the rolled total. For example, 1, 2, 3 and 4 together make 10.

What happens when I cannot match a roll?

The round ends automatically and the open numbers are added for your score. You can review Score & turns, Undo, or confirm a new round.

Is the score read as one large number?

No. This game adds the remaining tile values. Open tiles 2 and 8 score 10, not 28. It does not use a digit-concatenation scoring variant.

Can I play against another person?

This version provides solo random rounds and planning studies. It has no remote multiplayer, computer opponent or money stakes.

What is saved?

Completed studies, unlocked levels and sound preferences save on this device when local storage works. Unfinished rounds restart after a reload. Restart repeats the same seed; New round chooses another after confirmation.
