A Domineering game begins with an empty board and two players who see its spaces differently. Vertical places jade tiles up and down; Horizontal places amber tiles from left to right. Domineering offers a full six-by-six computer game and 20 progressive studies about keeping a useful lane. Play free online with no ads or download.
How to play Domineering online
- Choose a study or a full game and read your fixed orientation. Vertical moves first on an empty board.
- Select the top cell of a vertical pair or the left cell of a horizontal pair. Both cells must be empty.
- Check the preview, then press Place. Keep a future pair available while reducing the opponent's choices.
- Leave the opponent without a legal placement. Finish a study within its turn budget to unlock the next one.
Controls
Click or tap the top cell of a vertical pair, or the left cell of a horizontal pair, to preview a tile. Press Place to commit; tap the selected cell again or choose Cancel to clear it. Arrow keys move focus, and Enter or Space places the focused pair. H asks for a hint, P plays it, and U or Ctrl+Z undoes your whole turn and the computer reply. Previous cell and Next cell provide button alternatives.
A tip before you start
Count pairs in your own direction and in your opponent's direction before placing a tile. Two empty cells help you only when they touch the right way. A move that leaves several isolated cells can still end the game.
One board, two fixed directions
The board has six rows and six columns. Vertical starts and covers two empty cells directly above and below each other with one jade tile. Horizontal then covers two empty cells side by side with one amber tile. Players alternate one placement at a time. Your orientation stays fixed throughout the game, even when the other direction would fit better.
Place carefully: tiles stay put
A tile must cover exactly two adjacent empty cells. It cannot overlap another tile, cross an edge, wrap to the next row or sit diagonally. Once placed, tiles cannot move, rotate or be removed. You cannot pass. Select the top or left cell of a legal pair to see a preview before using Place; a canceled touch or a drag away never commits it.
The last useful pair wins
You win when the opponent begins a turn with no legal placement. The board need not be full: an isolated empty cell, or a pair facing the wrong direction, is unusable. A promising move can remove several enemy pairs while preserving one of your own. Compare both players' remaining options in Board & rules instead of judging the position only by its number of empty cells.
Twenty studies with longer plans
Every study begins at a position reached through legal alternating play from the empty board, with you playing Vertical. Leave Horizontal without a move within the displayed number of your turns. The shortest guaranteed plan grows from one turn to six, while reachable positions and consequential choices increase at every study. Empty space grows from eight to twenty-four cells. The computer uses exact replies in these smaller positions, so completing a study means carrying out the win, not merely selecting a good first tile. Board & rules includes the legal opening history.
Play a whole game from either side
Full CPU match starts with an empty board. Other side starts a fresh game with your orientation switched after confirmation; Vertical still moves first. Restart keeps your current role and starting position. The full-game computer looks ahead three moves within a fixed search limit, so it is a bounded practice opponent rather than a perfect solver. Full-game hints use the same bounded approach and do not promise a win.
Hints and Undo support the lesson
A study allows two successful hints. When a guaranteed win remains within your turn budget, a hint preserves a fastest winning plan. If an earlier mistake has lost that plan, the game suggests Undo instead. Undo restores your entire previous turn and the computer reply, but it does not refund hints. Help, pause and restart dialogs suspend computer actions. If an action fails, Retry CPU keeps the position intact while trying again.
How this differs from other domino games
These tiles have no pip values to match, and neither player draws a hand or extends a chain. Domineering also differs from Cram: Cram allows both players to choose either orientation, while this game assigns one direction to each player. Here, a two-cell gap may be a resource for only one side.
Progress stays on this device
Unlocked studies, best scores and sound preference are stored locally when storage is available. An unfinished board starts again after reloading. Help and Board & rules open separately from the playing area. Retry loading handles missing artwork without removing saved progress. There are no accounts, cash stakes or online multiplayer rooms.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rotate my tile?
No. Vertical always places up and down, while Horizontal always places left and right. A gap in the other direction is not a legal move for you.
Can I move or remove a tile after placing it?
Placed tiles remain fixed. Undo can restore your previous whole turn and the computer reply, but moving an older tile is never a legal game action.
Must the board be full for the game to end?
No. The player whose turn starts without a legal pair loses, even when single empty cells or pairs in the other orientation remain.
Is this the same game as Cram?
No. Cram allows either orientation for both players. Domineering gives each player one fixed orientation.
Is the computer perfect?
The full-game opponent searches within a fixed limit and is not perfect. The smaller teaching positions use exact replies and exact study hints.
Is this Domineering game free with no ads?
Yes. Play free with no ads, account or download. Your opponent is a local computer, with no online multiplayer rooms.
