How to play Konane online
- Choose a study or a full computer game. Read your color, phase and study move budget.
- In a full game's opening, select any of your stones and confirm its removal. Black captures first after both removals.
- Select a stone, then a highlighted final landing. Compare short and long straight captures before committing.
- Leave the opponent without a legal jump. Finish a study within its budget to unlock the next one.
Controls
Click or tap your stone, then a highlighted final landing. During the opening, select your stone and press Remove to confirm. Arrow keys move focus; Enter or Space selects or confirms removal. H asks for a hint, P plays it, and U or Ctrl+Z undoes your whole turn and the computer reply. Previous cell, Next cell and Use cell provide button alternatives.
A tip before you start
Count future jumping routes as well as stones. A long chain can remove the very stepping-stones you need later. Compare stopping after one jump with continuing straight before choosing your landing.
Learn the Konane Hawaiian game
Kōnane is a traditional Hawaiian strategy game about movement and capture. This version uses an eight-by-eight board with alternating black and white stones. Your goal is to leave the other player without a legal jump. A small group with useful jumping routes can outlast a larger group that has run out of moves.
A declared opening, so the first moves are clear
Konane follows the teaching opening described by the U.S. National Park Service: Black removes any black stone, then White removes any white stone. White does not have to remove a neighboring stone here. Black makes the first capture. Other Kōnane traditions and computer versions restrict these opening choices, so compare the stated profile when moving between tables.
Straight captures with a real stopping choice
A move jumps over an adjacent enemy stone into the empty space immediately beyond it, horizontally or vertically. Remove the jumped stone. The same stone may continue jumping in the same direction, or stop after any jump. You cannot turn a corner during a chain, move diagonally or make a noncapturing move. There are no kings or promotions. Highlighted landings show the complete choices: a nearer landing ends sooner, while a farther one completes several straight jumps.
Why the last move matters
The player whose turn begins without a legal jump loses. Capturing many stones can look strong while actually reducing your future options. Before moving, consider what your opponent can jump next and which enemy stones you will still need as bridges. Sometimes the shorter capture keeps a useful reply available; sometimes a longer chain removes the opponent's only route.
Twenty studies with deeper decisions
Each study starts from a position reached by legal play from the full opening, and you control Black. Win within the displayed number of your turns against exact computer replies. The shortest guaranteed plan grows from one turn to six turns. The number of reachable positions and meaningful choices increases at every study, with ten to twenty stones remaining. Success requires actually leaving White without a jump, not simply finding one good move. Board & rules includes the legal opening history of each position.
Play a complete game as Black or White
Full CPU match begins with all sixty-four stones. Other side starts a fresh game with your role switched after confirmation. Restart repeats your current starting position and role. The full-game computer searches a limited number of positions two moves deep, so it is a practice opponent rather than a perfect solver. Teaching studies use a separate exact calculation because their smaller positions can be fully explored.
Hints explain the kind of help you are getting
Each study allows two successful hints. A hint preserves a fastest guaranteed win when that remains possible within your move budget. If a mistake has lost that plan, the game suggests Undo instead. Full-game hints use the bounded computer and make no winning guarantee. Undo restores your whole previous turn together with the reply, but does not refund study hints. You can cancel a selection by tapping the selected stone again or choosing Cancel.
Keep progress and rules close to the board
Unlocked studies, best scores and sound preference are saved locally when storage is available. An unfinished board restarts after reloading. Help and Board & rules open separately from the main board. If artwork cannot load, Retry loading preserves saved progress. If a computer action fails, Retry CPU keeps the current position intact. This game has no account, cash stakes or online multiplayer rooms.
Frequently asked questions
Must White remove a stone next to Black's opening space?
Not in this version. Both players may remove any of their own stones during the opening, following the declared National Park Service teaching profile. Other versions use different restrictions.
Can I stop after just one capture?
Yes. Select the nearer highlighted landing to end after one jump. A farther landing carries out additional jumps by the same stone in the same direction.
Can a capture chain change direction?
No. Every jump in one move stays on the same straight row or column and continues in the same direction.
Does capturing the most stones win the game?
Not necessarily. You win by leaving your opponent without a legal jump. Keeping a future jumping route can matter more than taking an extra stone now.
Is the computer perfect?
The full-game opponent is bounded and is not perfect. Study replies and study hints use exact calculations for their smaller positions.
Is this Konane game free with no ads?
Yes. Play free with no ads, account or download. It runs against a local computer opponent rather than online multiplayer rooms.
