How to play Dots and Boxes online

  1. Choose Two Players to share this device, Computer Match for a solo game, or 20 Challenges for prepared endgames. Full matches offer 2×2 or 3×3 boxes; Player 1 starts.
  2. Tap an empty line between two neighboring dots. Lines run horizontally or vertically, and each line can be drawn only once.
  3. Complete a box's fourth side to claim it and take another turn. If your line completes two boxes, claim both and keep playing.
  4. Continue until every box has an owner. The player with more boxes wins a full match; equal scores are a draw. In a challenge, finish with at least the displayed winning margin.

Controls

Click or tap the middle of an empty line. Arrow keys and Line −/Line + cycle available lines; Enter, Space or Draw line confirms. H requests a hint, Play hint draws the outlined line, and U or Undo takes back the last decision. A canceled touch or drag does not draw a line.

A tip before you start

Count what your opponent can claim after your next line. An open chain can give away several boxes because each capture keeps the turn. The final challenges show why taking every immediately available box can be worse than handing over a short chain and keeping control of a longer one.

Dots and Boxes game: 2 player rules

Both players use the same mouse, touchscreen or keyboard and take turns on this device. Blue jasmine marks Player 1's boxes, and coral primrose marks Player 2's boxes; P1 and P2 labels also identify ownership. A scoring move keeps the same player active, even when one line completes two neighboring boxes. There are no online rooms or remote opponents.

Choose a board or play the computer

Full matches start with an empty board of four or nine boxes. The computer is a limited-search opponent rather than a promise of perfect play. These matches are separate from the challenge ladder: winning a match does not unlock a challenge.

Twenty challenges about chains and control

Each challenge begins partway through a legal game, with scores and the current player already set. Your goal is a final winning margin, such as finishing at least three boxes ahead. The first boards have four boxes and the later boards have nine. More lines remain to plan through as you advance, and later positions require looking farther ahead, including the opponent's replies. Every target is achievable against the best replies, but a poor choice can still miss it.

A hint previews one line

Each attempt offers three hints. In a challenge, a hint shows an optimal continuation from your current position; after a mistake, that position may no longer be able to reach the original target. In full matches, hints use the same limited search as the computer. A hint only outlines a line until you tap it or choose Play hint. Undo does not give back a used hint.

Undo a whole computer response

In solo play, Undo restores the position before your last line and removes every computer line that followed, including its repeated scoring turns. In Two Players, Undo removes one line. Restarting, changing mode, changing board size or changing challenge asks before replacing the current game.

Progress stays on this device

When local storage is available, challenge unlocks, best scores and the sound setting are saved. The unfinished board and Undo history are not saved. Reloading returns to a fresh challenge 1 while retaining those records; you can select another unlocked challenge.

Frequently asked questions

What is the game where you connect dots to make squares?

It is Dots and Boxes. Draw a horizontal or vertical line between neighboring dots; the player who draws the fourth side of a square claims that box and takes another turn. Dots and Boxes offers same-device two-player matches, a computer opponent and twenty challenges.

Can two people play on the same device?

Yes. Choose Two Players and share the screen, mouse or keyboard. The game does not connect people on separate devices.

Do I move again after completing a box?

Yes. Completing one or two boxes scores the points and keeps your turn. Continue until you draw a line that does not complete a box, or until the board is finished.

Can one line claim two boxes?

Yes. If two adjacent boxes share their only missing side, drawing that side claims both boxes for the current player.

Can a Dots and Boxes match end in a draw?

Yes. A full match ends in a draw if both players own the same number of boxes. That is possible on the four-box board; a nine-box board has an odd total and cannot tie.

What does the challenge target mean?

A target of +3 means your final score must be at least three boxes higher than the opponent's. The game waits until all boxes have owners before checking the target. Challenges may assign you either Player 1 or Player 2.

Is the computer always perfect?

The full-match computer uses limited search and can make mistakes. Prepared challenges use exact endgame replies, so reaching their target requires a sound plan.
