How to play Mini Crossword online
- Select a numbered square to read its Across or Down clue. Shaded letters are fixed clues; all other answer squares can be edited.
- Type letters with a physical keyboard or tap the on-screen letter keys. The focus advances within that answer and skips fixed letters. Each crossing uses one shared letter for both words.
- Tap a crossing again, or press Switch direction, to read the other clue. Previous clue and Next clue visit every answer even when its first square is already filled.
- Complete every answer to unlock the next puzzle. Check highlights entered letters that disagree with the intended answers. Hint corrects one letter, and Undo reverses one edit.
Controls
Click or tap a square, then enter A–Z. Arrow keys move focus, Enter or Space switches direction, and Backspace/Delete clears only the selected editable square. Ctrl/Cmd+Z undoes. The same actions are available through the touch keyboard and nearby buttons. A cancelled touch or a drag away from its starting key enters nothing.
A tip before you start
Start with a clue you recognize, then use the letters where it crosses another answer. A word can sound plausible yet fail to match its crossings. Check the clue's meaning and the displayed answer length before replacing letters that another word already supports.
Twenty small freeform crosswords
Each original grid contains five to eight Across and Down answers in one connected arrangement, at most nine squares wide or tall. They are compact freeform crosswords rather than symmetrical newspaper grids. Some letters belong to only one answer; crossing letters belong to two.
Difficulty that changes beyond the layout
The number of unknown letters increases at every puzzle, from eight to twenty-seven. The answer count and number of unknown crossing constraints never decrease. Later puzzles therefore require more entries and shared-letter decisions. These measured demands do not guarantee that every later clue feels harder to every player.
Original clues and familiar English answers
Clues were written for these puzzles. Answer spellings were checked against the English Speller Database's US English list. The game uses common words, with no abbreviation key or topical trivia requirement. A natural-language clue can suggest another word; the crossings and intended answer determine this particular puzzle's completion.
Clear, Check, Hint and Undo
Clear affects just the selected editable square, including its shared letter when it is a crossing. It never erases a whole answer or neighboring squares. Check marks wrong entered letters while leaving blanks available. Hint changes one wrong or blank letter, preferring the current clue, and preserves every other letter. Undo restores the previous edit without refunding hint use.
A complete puzzle in the game window
The grid, current clue and letter keyboard remain in the game area in portrait or landscape. Required controls stay nearby, and Help opens in a separate dialog. Original illustrated paper and wood artwork gives the puzzle its garden-desk setting. Unlocked levels, best scores and sound save locally when browser storage works; unfinished grids restart after a reload.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a daily-only puzzle?
No. These are twenty fixed original puzzles that you can unlock and replay at any time. There is no promise of a new puzzle each day.
Is this the same as a word fill-in game?
No. Here you solve text clues and enter individual letters. Word Fill In separately supplies complete words in a bank and asks you to fit them into crossing slots.
Can I play without a physical keyboard?
Yes. Tap the on-screen A–Z keyboard and use the clue, direction, Clear, Check, Hint and Undo buttons.
Why did changing one letter alter two answers?
A crossing is a single square shared by one Across answer and one Down answer. Both must use the same letter there.
Does Hint reveal a whole answer?
No. It corrects exactly one wrong or blank letter. The other squares remain unchanged.
Can I restart without losing unlocked levels?
Yes. Restart asks before replacing the current attempt. Your unlocked levels, best scores and sound setting remain saved when storage is available.
