How to play Nonogram online

  1. Read each row and column clue in order. A clue of 2 1 means two filled squares, at least one empty square, then one filled square.
  2. Use Fill mode for squares in a run and Cross mode for known empty squares.
  3. Complete the exact filled pattern to unlock the next puzzle; crossing every empty square is optional.

Controls

Tap or drag to mark squares. Switch Fill / Cross mode with its button. Previous, Next and Mark square provide keyboard-accessible controls. Undo reverses a stroke; a canceled drag restores it.

A tip before you start

Start with runs that nearly fill a row or column. Compare the overlapping possibilities, then use crosses to mark spaces that cannot belong to any run.

Solve a five-square line from its clues

Start with a five-square line before solving the full picture. In Nonogram Challenge 1, the fourth row has clues 2 2, so the complete line is forced.

  1. In Challenge 1, read the fourth row’s clues: 2 2. The two filled runs use four squares and their required gap uses the fifth. Fill, fill, cross, fill, fill is the only arrangement.
  2. The only arrangement is filled, filled, empty, filled, filled. Mark the middle square with Cross mode.
  3. For a five-square line with a single clue 3, place the run as far left and as far right as it can go in your head.
  4. Only the middle square is filled in every placement. Fill that overlap, then use the crossing column to find more information.

Here ■ means filled, × means known empty and ? means undecided. Do not cross an undecided square just because it lies outside the current overlap.

Twenty unique solutions

Each starting grid has been checked for exactly one solution. The sequence increases the number of possible row-and-column arrangements before their intersections are applied, then introduces larger grids. This is a design measure of increasing reasoning demands, not a personal difficulty rating.

Check without a timer

Check highlights filled or crossed squares that conflict with the solution, while Hint corrects one square. The puzzles have no timer or lives counter, so you can revise your reasoning at your own pace.

A clue is a run length, not a Sudoku digit

In a nonogram, a clue of 3 means three consecutive filled squares. Clues 2 1 mean a run of two, at least one empty square, then a run of one. You do not type those numbers into the board. Sudoku instead asks you to place digits with no repeats in each row, column and box.

Choose a course or a dated puzzle

Nonogram has twenty fixed puzzles that unlock in sequence. Daily Nonogram offers a separate pattern for each published UTC date and keeps older dates playable. Course progress saves unlocked levels; dated puzzles can also save unfinished marks in this browser when local storage is available.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play for free without downloading?

Yes. All twenty puzzles are free in the browser with no ads. Your unlocked levels are saved locally where storage is available.

How is progress saved?

Completed levels, unlocked challenges, best scores and the sound setting are saved in this browser when local storage is available. An unfinished board starts over when you reload. Restart asks for confirmation, and does not erase unlocked levels.

Can I play on a phone or computer?

Use the illustrated board with a mouse or touch, or use the labeled action buttons with a keyboard. The game frame fits the available screen; Help opens separately. Full screen is available where the browser permits it.

Does a question mark in the example mean an empty square?

No. It means that the row clue alone does not decide that square. Use the column clues before marking it filled or empty.

Do I have to cross every empty square to finish?

No. The filled pattern must be correct. Cross marks help you reason about empty squares, but marking every empty square is optional.

Is Daily Nonogram part of the twenty-level course?

No. It uses separate dated puzzles and progress. Follow the Daily Nonogram link to the latest available puzzle or an older date in the archive.
