How to play Kakuro online

  1. Read a column sum above the grid or a row sum to its left.
  2. Fill a blank square using a digit that can satisfy both its row and column. Starter digits stay fixed.
  3. Complete every sum without repeating a digit in a run to unlock the next challenge.

Controls

Select a square with a mouse or touch, then choose a digit. Previous and Next move between editable squares. Pencil records candidate digits, Erase clears a square, and Undo restores the last entry. Check highlights filled digits that disagree with the unique solution.

A tip before you start

Subtract the fixed digits from a run’s total before choosing the remaining digits. A run with just one empty square gives a direct answer; compare that answer with the crossing run before entering it.

Solve the first Kakuro board with crossing sums

This is the opening 3×3 board in Kakuro. Start with the two rows that each have one empty square, then use their shared column.

Kakuro Challenge 1: a 3×3 board with row sums 15, 14 and 14, and column sums 18, 9 and 16.

  1. The top row totals 15 and already contains 8 and 4. Its middle square must be 3: 15 − 8 − 4 = 3.
  2. The middle row totals 14 and contains 4 and 9. Its middle square must be 1: 14 − 4 − 9 = 1.
  3. The middle column totals 9. With 3 above 1, its bottom square must be 5. The bottom row then needs 3 beside its fixed 6: 14 − 6 − 5 = 3.
  4. Check the right column: 4 + 9 + 3 = 16. Every run meets its sum and uses distinct digits. The two 3s are allowed because they lie in different rows and columns.

A compact kakuro puzzle online

These learning boards use complete crossing rows and columns with several fixed starter digits. They begin with a three-by-three white grid and grow to six-by-six. Each level adds one more empty square, from four to twenty-three, while the hint allowance decreases.

One answer, room to work it out

Every board has been checked for exactly one solution. Use pencil marks to keep several possibilities visible, then erase candidates as the crossing sums narrow them down. There is no timer or lives counter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play these kakuro puzzles online free without an app?

Yes. Every challenge is free with no ads and no download. Your unlocked levels can be saved in this browser.

Are the gray digits editable?

No. They are fixed starter digits that help you learn the crossing-sum rules. The empty squares are yours to solve.

Can a digit repeat elsewhere on the board?

Yes. A digit may appear in different runs. It cannot repeat within the same horizontal or vertical run.

How is progress saved?

Unlocked challenges, best scores and the sound setting are saved in this browser when local storage is available. An unfinished board resets after a reload. Restart asks for confirmation and keeps unlocked challenges.

Can I play on my phone or computer?

Use touch or a mouse, or focus the labeled action buttons with a keyboard. The game fits its available window and switches to a portrait layout on phones. Help opens in a separate dialog. Full screen is available where supported.

Is Kakuro the same as Sudoku?

No. Kakuro uses sums and distinct digits within crossing runs. Sudoku places digits 1–9 once in each row, column and 3×3 box; it does not use sum clues.

Does Check prove my unfinished Kakuro is solved?

No. Check identifies incorrect filled digits. Empty squares still need answers, and every run must satisfy its sum without repeated digits.
