How to play Pentomino Puzzle online

  1. Identify the light board cells and the pieces listed in the tray. Early levels use only part of the full set.
  2. Select a tile, rotate or flip it, and choose the top-left anchor of its bounding box on the board.
  3. Press Place when the preview fits. Plan the shapes and empty regions left for the other tiles.
  4. Cover every light cell with all the listed tiles to finish the silhouette and unlock the next board.

Controls

Select a piece in the tray, use Rotate or Flip, then tap or click the board to choose the top-left corner of its bounding box. Place confirms the preview. Select a placed piece in the tray and Remove before repositioning it. Arrow keys move the anchor; Enter or Space places, R rotates, F flips, brackets choose pieces, Delete removes, E explains, C checks, H hints and U undoes.

A tip before you start

Look at the empty regions left behind by a placement. Each must contain a multiple of five cells. A region with ten cells may still be impossible if neither remaining shape fits, so passing the area check is only a first step.

Twelve shapes built from five squares

There are twelve free pentomino shapes when rotations and mirror images count as the same piece. Each tile contains exactly five edge-connected squares. Letters in the tray identify the shapes, and the colored wood helps you trace their boundaries. A piece may turn or flip freely, but you cannot split it, overlap another piece or cover a hole. Each listed tile must appear exactly once.

Understand the placement anchor

The anchor is the top-left corner of the selected shape's smallest rectangular bounding box. That corner may itself be empty: for example, a shape can begin one square to the right on its first row. Rotate and Flip update the shape around this bounding box. The dashed square marks the anchor, and the translucent tiles show where the piece would land. A green outline means the placement is locally legal; it does not promise that the remaining board can be solved.

Plan the space you leave behind

Suppose a proposed tile cuts an empty pocket of seven cells away from the rest of the board. Every remaining piece occupies five cells and is connected, so that pocket cannot be filled. Undo or remove the tile. A pocket of ten cells passes this area test, but its outline must still accept two of your actual remaining shapes. Long strips often constrain the straight piece, while a narrow corner can rule out a broad cross-shaped piece.

Twenty original silhouettes with growing choices

The first two boards use three pieces, followed by two boards at each piece count up to twelve. Each board has exactly one complete geometric packing, independently checked during development. The number of placements that fit a tile locally but cannot belong to the completed packing increases at every level. Later boards therefore ask you to distinguish among more misleading legal options. These structural demands increase, although individual players may find some shapes easier than others.

Use explanations and hints deliberately

Explain describes the selected tile, its anchor and any empty region with an impossible area. Check looks for that same area conflict across the board. A clean check does not prove the shapes can finish. A hint considers the complete packing constraints and places one tile only after proving a unique completion compatible with your existing placements. An impossible position or a search limit changes nothing and spends no hint. Each puzzle allows three hints; Undo does not refund them.

Move tiles without losing your progress

To reposition a tile already on the board, select its letter in the tray and press Remove. Its old cells become available again. Undo restores the previous placement or removal. Moving your pointer to another cell during a press cancels that tap. Restart asks before replacing the current attempt and keeps unlocked levels and best scores. Any complete legal packing is accepted; no particular order of placement is required.

Keep the next challenge available

Completing a board unlocks the next one. This device stores unlocked levels, best scores and the sound setting where local storage is available. Reloading starts a fresh attempt while preserving those records; when storage is unavailable, progress lasts for the current session. There is no timer. Help opens separately, Pause blocks board input, and Full screen uses the browser's available controls.

Frequently asked questions

Can I flip a pentomino over?

Yes. Reflections and rotations are both legal. Some shapes look the same after a particular transformation; others, such as F, have distinct reflected orientations.

Why does the preview overlap a hole even when the anchor is on the board?

The anchor positions the whole bounding box. Every occupied square of the selected shape must land on a light board cell. Move the anchor or change the orientation until the entire piece fits.

Does every level use all twelve pieces?

No. The sequence starts with three and adds one piece after every two boards. The final two boards use all twelve shapes.

Why does Check pass but Hint report no completion?

Check tests empty region areas, a necessary condition. Hint tests the full set of shapes, cell coverage and piece usage. A position can pass the area test and still be impossible.

Do I need to fill the dark gaps in the silhouette?

No. Only the light cells belong to the board. Gaps and spaces outside the outline must remain uncovered.
