How to play Word Chain online

  1. Read the START and FINISH letters, then choose an unused word beginning with START.
  2. Look at the last letter of the word you placed. Choose another unused card starting with that letter. The NEXT indicator keeps track of the required letter.
  3. Continue until every word card has a place in the chain. Each placed card shows its order number while staying in the same visible grid.
  4. Finish using every card exactly once and end on the required FINISH letter. Any complete order that follows these rules clears the puzzle.

Controls

Click or tap an unused card to append it. Tap a placed card to return that card and every later card. Arrow keys move the focus; Enter or Space selects. Previous, Next card and Select provide the same navigation. Back, Backspace or Delete removes the last word. U or Undo restores the last edit; C or Clear empties the chain; H or Hint highlights a viable next word. Esc clears the hint outline.

A tip before you start

A word can fit the current last letter yet leave other cards stranded. Before taking it, look at which remaining words can follow its ending. Save a word with no useful successor for the finish when possible. If a choice blocks the rest of the chain, Undo lets you explore another order.

What makes a word chain game hard?

More cards mean more links to plan, especially when several words begin with the letter you need. The first puzzle needs four placements; each following level adds one card, reaching 23 in level 20. From level four onward, every puzzle includes a matching choice that can prevent a complete chain. Difficulty still depends on which patterns you notice, and a longer puzzle may have several valid solutions.

Connect final letters to first letters

In this version, the letters at the ends of the words decide whether they connect. For example, GARDEN can lead to NEST because GARDEN ends in N and NEST starts in N. You keep each whole word intact. There is no need for the two words to form a phrase, and you do not rearrange their internal letters.

One set of cards, with visible order numbers

Every word stays in one grid, whether placed or unused. A number on a card records its place in your chain, so the board shows the whole arrangement without a second copy of the word pool. The enlarged focused-card display shows the word and its starting and ending letters.

A valid link can still lead to a dead end

The game refuses a word whose first letter does not match NEXT. It also tells you when an otherwise connected prefix cannot use all the remaining cards. This does not end the challenge: use Undo or Back, or tap an earlier placed card to shorten the chain. Clear resets the order without changing the supplied words.

Hints follow the order you have chosen

Hint finds a full continuation from your current prefix and highlights its next card. It can support a different valid order from the author's example. If your prefix has no complete continuation, Hint asks you to backtrack. It does not place a card for you, and requesting the same visible hint again does not count as another hint.

Undo, progress and replay

Undo restores one complete edit, including all cards returned when you tap an earlier word or use Clear. Hint use is not refunded. Restart and level changes ask before replacing your attempt. Unlocked levels, best scores and sound save locally when storage is available; the unfinished chain resets after reloading. These are 20 fixed challenges, with no timer or daily release schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a compound-word chain game?

This version uses last-letter to first-letter connections between complete words. You do not need to make compound words or familiar phrases.

Can more than one order solve a puzzle?

Yes. Every arrangement that uses all supplied cards once, follows the letter links and meets the start and finish conditions is accepted. You do not have to match one hidden order.

Why did a card that matches NEXT block my chain?

Matching the next letter is only a local check. The choice may leave some remaining cards disconnected from the route you need. Undo or remove an earlier word to try another branch.

What happens when I tap a word already in the chain?

That word and all words after it become unplaced. The earlier part of your chain stays connected. Undo restores the whole removed section.

Does Hint finish the puzzle for me?

No. It outlines one next card belonging to a complete continuation. Select that card yourself. When no full continuation exists, remove some placed words before requesting another hint.

Is Word Chain unlimited or multiplayer?

It has 20 fixed, replayable solo challenges. It does not provide an unlimited generator, daily puzzles or remote multiplayer.
